  1. St John's College is a constituent college of the University of Oxford. Founded as a men's college in 1555, it has been coeducational since 1979. Its founder, Sir Thomas White, intended to provide a source of educated Roman Catholic clerics to support the Counter-Reformation under Queen Mary.

  4. History. The College of St John the Baptist was founded in 1555 by Sir Thomas White, a wealthy London merchant tailor. The new College took over the premises of St Bernard's College, founded in 1437 by Henry Chichele, Archbishop of Canterbury, for Cistercian monks studying at Oxford University.

  5. History. The Colleges founder, Sir Thomas White, took over and modified the premises of St Bernards College. Over the following century the Front Quad, and Canterbury Quad, were developed into the buildings we see today.
