Stadionet ble åpnet 26. september 1926 som hjemmebane for Lyn og flere andre lokale lag. Den første fotballandskampen ble spilt der i 1927, og NFF begynte etter dette å gradvis kjøpe deler av stadionselskapet. Tilskuerrekorden stammer fra 1949, da 37 096 så Norge spille mot Danmark.
