Elizabeth Townshend, Viscountess Sydney (7 April 1736 – 1 May 1826) was the wife of Thomas Townshend, 1st Viscount Sydney. She was the daughter of Richard Powys, MP, and his wife, the former Lady Mary Brudenell, daughter of George Brudenell, 3rd Earl of Cardigan. Elizabeth's sister Mary married James Stopford, 2nd Earl of Courtown.

The second creation came in 1789 when Thomas Townshend (the then Baron Sydney) was made Viscount Sydney, of St Leonards, in the Peerage of Great Britain. He served as Home Secretary and Leader of the House of Lords .

Thomas Townshend, first Viscount Sydney PC (1733–1800), British politician, was instrumental in implementing his government’s 1786 decision to establish a penal colony on the east coast of Australia. Townshend was first elected to the House of Commons in 1754.
