Respiratory syncytial virus (RSV), also called human respiratory syncytial virus (hRSV) and human orthopneumovirus, is a contagious virus that causes infections of the respiratory tract. It is a negative-sense, single-stranded RNA virus. Its name is derived from the large cells known as syncytia that form when infected cells fuse.
Esta familia de virus fue un género de la familia Paramyxoviridae hasta 2016. 1 El genoma de estos virus es de ARN monocatenario negativo y por tanto se incluyen en el grupo V de la clasificación de Baltimore. Dentro de esta familia de virus, se han descrito dos géneros, Orthopneumovirus y Metapneumovirus.
El VSR causa infección del tracto respiratorio en pacientes de todas las edades. Es la causa mayor de infecciones al tracto respiratorio durante la infancia y la niñez. En los climas templados es una epidemia anual durante los meses de invierno.
