  1. The Case of Lady Camber is a play by the British writer Horace Annesley Vachell, which was first performed in 1915. The play was a success in the West End, enjoying a lengthy run at the Savoy Theatre. It was not as well received in New York when it opened at the Lyceum Theatre in 1917.

    Vachell was born at Sydenham, Kent on 30 October 1861, eldest of three sons of former landowner Richard Tanfield Vachell (died 1868), of Coptfold Hall, Essex, and Georgina (died 1910), daughter of Arthur Lyttelton Annesley, of Arley Castle, Staffordshire.     After a short period in the Rifle Brigade, he went to California where he became partner in a land company. He is said to have introduced the game of poloto Southern California.     In 1889, Vachell married Eliza (born 1869; known as "Lydie" or Lydia), daughter of Chauncy Hatch Phillips, his partner in the Californian land company; they had a son- killed in service during the First World War- and a daughter. She died in 1895 after the birth of their daughter.

    Many of his works first appeared in serialisations in Cassell's Magazine, The Cornhill Magazine, The Pall Mall Magazine, Pearson's Magazine, The Strand Magazine, The Windsor Magazineand other contemporary magazines.
