Glarus ist ein Kanton in der Deutschschweiz und zählt zu den Regionen Nordost- und Südostschweiz. Der Hauptort ist die gleichnamige Stadt Glarus, der einwohnerstärkste Ort ist die Gemeinde Glarus Nord.
Glarus liegt in der geografischen Mitte des gleichnamigen Kantons an der Linth und am Fusse des rund 2300 m hohen Vorderglärnisch. Der höchste Punkt des Gemeindegebiets ist der 2914 m ü. M. hohe Bächistock, der zum Massiv des Glärnisch gehört.

In 1861 practically the entire town was destroyed.
