Howard finds some of the tools Michelle and Emmett were using for their plan and threatens to immerse them both in perchloric acid. Emmett takes responsibility, claiming he was building a weapon to use to get Howard's gun.
John Goodman did an interview where he said since Howard is paranoid to begin with, he's automatically going to be suspicious of a 'confederacy' between the other two since they're the same age and he's the odd one out.
Once Howard reveals that the barrel contains perchloric acid, he threatens to kill them if they do not confess what they where doing. Emmett decides to cover Michelle by taking all responsibility, claiming that he was using the tools to get his gun, and that he feels sorry for it.

Putting her doubts aside, Michelle settles into Howard's bunker alongside Emmett (John Gallagher Jr.).
Howard catches her, but she pushes the vat of acid toward him, causing him to slip and fall face-first onto it. She climbs over and heads toward the exit. The acid eats through an electrical wire and starts a fire.
