Big Brother and the Holding Company is an American rock band that formed in San Francisco in 1965 as part of the same psychedelic music scene that produced the Grateful Dead, Quicksilver Messenger Service, and Jefferson Airplane.
Big Brother & The Holding Company were pioneers of the San Francisco sound of the 60s. The band launched the career of Janis Joplin and recorded "Cheap Thrills' one of the greatest albums of all time.

Recorded during three days in December 1966 for Mainstream Records, it was released on August 23, 1967, shortly after the band's major success at the Monterey Pop Festival.

1966 JAN – THE FIRST BIG BROTHER ENGAGEMENT. Big Brother came out into the open on 22 January 1966 at a Trips Festival that had been organized by Ken Kesey. There had been a previous Festival that October in the Longshoreman’s Hall … odd place for psychedelic pranksters … and it had been quite magical.
