The land to the east of the Royal Hospital was the site of the famous Ranelagh Pleasure Ground in the eighteenth century. It was re-designed by John Gibson in the nineteenth century and is now a green retreat with shady walks, beside the site of the annual Chelsea Flower Show.
The site of 17th century formal gardens laid out around Sir Christopher Wren's Royal Hospital, Chelsea by George London and Henry Wise. Ranelagh Gardens, to the east, were developed as public pleasure gardens in the mid 18th century but reverted to the Royal Hospital in the early 19th century.
