Swanee River is a popular song composed by Stephen Foster, often referred to as the “Father of American music.” Released in 1851, it has become an American standard and is commonly associated with the minstrel shows of the 19th century.
The Union army used "Swanee River" as a marching song during the Civil War. "Swanee River" is the best-selling sheet music song of all time. It has sold more than 20 million copies since its publication in 1851. Despite this, Stephen Foster died penniless in 1864.
The Suwannee River (also spelled Suwanee River) is a river that runs through south Georgia southward into Florida in the Southern United States. It is a wild blackwater river, about 246 miles (396 km) long.
