Cölln (German:) was the twin city of Old Berlin from the 13th century to the 18th century. Cölln was located on the Fisher Island section of Spree Island, opposite Altberlin on the western bank of the River Spree, until the cities were merged by Frederick I of Prussia to form Berlin in 1710.
Die fünf Städte Berlin, Cölln, Friedrichswerder, Dorotheenstadt und Friedrichstadt wurden 1710 endgültig zur Königlichen Haupt- und Residenzstadt Berlin vereinigt. Das Wachstum der Stadt führte zu zunehmenden Eingriffen in die gewachsene Gebäudestruktur der Altstadtbereiche.
The original part of Berlin includes Spree Island (the former Cölln) with Museum Island and the Fischerinsel (Fisher Island), Alt-Berlin with the Nikolaiviertel (Nicolas' Quarter), as well as Friedrichswerder and Neu-Cölln (not to be confused with the district of Neukölln).
Alt-Berlin ("Old Berlin"), also spelled Altberlin, is a neighborhood (Stadtviertel), situated in the Berliner locality (Ortsteil) of Mitte, part of the homonymous borough. In the 13th century it was the sister town of the old Cölln, located on the northern Spree Island in the Margraviate of Brandenburg.

Deutsch: Als Alt-Berlin wird heute das Gebiet der historischen Stadt Berlin bezeichnet, die im Spätmittelalter mit der benachbarten Stadt Cölln zur einer Doppelstadt zusammenwuchs. Aus der Doppelstadt Berlin-Cölln entwickelte sich das heutige Berlin.
