Descended from a long-established Northumbrian family seated at Howick Hall, Grey was the second but eldest surviving son of General Charles Grey, 1st Earl Grey KB (1729–1807) and his wife Elizabeth (1743/4–1822), a daughter of George Grey of Southwick, County Durham.
Charles Grey, 2nd Earl Grey was a British politician, leader of the Whig (liberal) Party, and prime minister (1830–34), who presided over the passage of the Reform Act of 1832, modernizing the franchise and the electoral system.
While there is no evidence of when Georgiana began her affair with Charles Grey (later Earl Grey), she did become pregnant by him in 1791. Sent off to France, Georgiana believed she would die in childbirth.

Mary Elizabeth Grey, Countess Grey (née Ponsonby; 4 March 1776 – 26 November 1861) was a British aristocrat and political hostess. She is notable for being the wife of the prime minister in the 1830s through her marriage to Charles Grey, 2nd Earl Grey.
In 1794 Grey married Mary Elizabeth Ponsonby, a member of the Irish branch of the family. The Ponsonbys were Whigs to the core. Grey and his wife had six daughters and ten sons; he also had an illegitimate daughter by Georgiana, Duchess of Devonshire.
