  2. The cathedral was founded in the early 11th century under the Viking king Sitric Silkenbeard. It was rebuilt in stone in the late 12th century under the Norman potentate Strongbow, and considerably enlarged in the early 13th century, using Somerset stones and craftsmen.

Four years before St. Louis was chartered as a city in 1823, Christ Church was organized by 26 people who assembled for a service in a building that previously had been a dance hall and a courtroom. That worship service on Oct. 24, 1819, was the first for an Episcopal-Anglican congregation west of the Mississippi River.

  6. In 1912, the Rt. Rev. Chauncey Bruce Brewster, fifth Bishop of Connecticut, proposed designating a large urban parish to serve as a cathedral for the Diocese. His idea was accepted as was his choice of parish—Hartford’s Christ Church.
