Furth was born in Chicago, Illinois, the son of George and Evelyn (née Tuerk) Schweinfurth. [1] He was of German and Irish ancestry, and was raised as a Christian Scientist. He received a bachelor of science in speech at Northwestern University in 1954 and received his master's degree from Columbia University.

Furth's early versions of Company are present under the titles My Married Friends; and A Husband, A Wife, A Friend. The latter includes the Furth one-acts, Harry and Sarah, Bertha and Art, Peter and Georgia, Ma and Pa, Cynthia and William, Larraine and Allen, Jenny and David, and Dorothy and Lou.
