The course introduces students to the history of criminal law, the legal process, and theories of punishment. The course focuses on the interrelationship of the criminal justice system components in a multicultural context, crime reporting methodology, theories of crime causation, and current challenges to the system.
An excellent way to develop base concepts of criminal law, corrections, and criminal justice in California and the U.S., this degree provides a basis for understanding core principles used in criminal justice, preparing graduates for career opportunities in the field of criminal justice.
The Academy entrance requirements will be verified through successful completion of Criminal Justice G054 (Pre-Academy Orientation Class). The following prerequisites and requirements are applicable to the Regular Basic Course. Students must possess a valid California Drivers License.

Students will learn arrest laws, roles and responsibilities of security guards, de-escalation tactics, civil and criminal liability issues, terrorism awareness, and information sharing responsibilities.
