One attraction in Grein is Greinburg Castle, built between 1488 and 1493. The castle was purchased by Ernest I, Duke of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha in 1823 and is now owned by a family foundation, headed by Andreas, Prince of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha.
We are delighted to have Castle Greinburg open from May 1 st to October 26 th for visitors to tour and explore. The castle hosts the Saxe-Coburg and Gotha Family Foundation’s exhibition of ducal festive rooms decorated with historically valuable art and furniture, as well as the Upper Austrian Shipping Museum.

The Castle of Greinburg was chosen, for instance, by the Duchess Viktoria Adelheid as her summer residence. Her son, Prince Friedrich Josias, lived there permanently until his death. The building, which comprises four wings, houses the Coburg Rooms, which are the official rooms of the ducal family, as well as the Upper Austrian shipping museum.
For more than 500 years, Greinburg Castle, the oldest residential castle in Austria, has been enthroned majestically above the town of Grein and the Danube.
