Heinrich Karl Wilhelm Berghaus, 1797–1884. Heinrich Berghaus was born in the Prussian city of Kleve and was educated as a surveyor. He served in the Prussian army, became a geographical engineer employed in the War Department, and was assigned in 1816 to help conduct a trigonometrical field survey of the country.
