Nottingham is a city in Nottinghamshire, England. Pre-history. The middle Trent Valley was covered by ice sheets for large parts of the Paleolithic period between 500,000 and 10,000 years ago, and evidence of early human activity is limited to a small number of discarded stone artefacts found in glacial outwash or boulder clays. 14 de mar. de 2021 · Nottingham began in the 6th century as a small settlement called Snotta inga ham. The Anglo-Saxon word ham meant village. The word inga meant ‘belonging to’ and Snotta was a man. So its name meant the village owned by Snotta. Gradually its name changed to Snottingham then just Nottingham.
The early history of Nottingham dates back to 919 A.D. where King Edward the Elder captured Nottingham to which he built a fortress on the southern bank of the river Trent in 921 A.D.
Located in the East Midlands, Nottingham began life as a minor settlement in the 6th century known as Snottingham, the name later evolving to become the more familiar Nottingham. Over time, the settlement began to expand, developing into a town in the 9th century as the Danes turned Nottingham into a burgh with a defensive ditch surrounding it.

Early Modern History. By the late 17th century, the city had a vibrant silk and hosiery industry. It was also a centre for the malting industry. Nottingham continued to grow, and by the time of the English Civil War in the mid-17th century, around 5,000 people lived here.
