Our History - The Courtauld. The foundation of The Courtauld Institute of Art was presided over by a triumvirate of collectors, brought together by a common wish to improve the understanding of the visual arts in this country.
The Courtauld Institute of Art was founded in 1931 with a gift of French Impressionist and Post-Impressionist paintings, including Édouard Manet’s A Bar at the Folies-Bergère (1882) and Vincent van Gogh’s Self-Portrait with Bandaged Ear (1889), from the wealthy silk manufacturer Samuel Courtauld.

The Courtauld was founded in 1932 through the philanthropic efforts of the industrialist and art collector Samuel Courtauld, the diplomat and collector Lord Lee of Fareham, and the art historian Sir Robert Witt. [6] Originally the Courtauld was based in Home House, a townhouse designed by Robert Adam in Portman Square, Marylebone.
