Spain in the Middle Ages is a period in the history of Spain that began in the 5th century following the fall of the Western Roman Empire and ended with the beginning of the early modern period in 1492.
Medieval Spain was considered a battle for Christians who attempted to regain control from the Moors ever since they conquered Spain in 711 AD. The Moorish influence was prevalent during the early years of medieval Spain and it was marked by fighting among different Muslim Kingdoms.
With its large Muslim and Jewish populations, medieval Spain was the only multiracial and multireligious country in western Europe, and much of the development of Spanish civilization in religion, literature, art, and architecture during the later Middle Ages stemmed from this fact.

Usually, “medieval” is understood as roughly the millennium between 500 CE and 1500 CE, and these dates fit reasonably well with political eras in the Iberian Peninsula, from the arrival of the Visigoths in the late 5th century to the end of the reigns of Ferdinand and Isabella in the early 16th century.
Christian Spain was open to all the influences of northern Europe and received a steady influx of pilgrims, monks, knights, merchants, and others who contributed to the reform of the church, the growth of schools and universities, and the introduction of Roman and canon law.
Early Medieval Spain. Belief in depopulation and repopulation was highly influential, at scholarly and popular levels, until very recently; the approach has affected most aspects of the interpretation of social and political change in the early middle ages.
