Thomas Howard, 3rd Duke of Norfolk, KG, PC (10 March 1473 – 25 August 1554) was a prominent English politician and nobleman of the Tudor era. He was an uncle of two of the wives of King Henry VIII, Anne Boleyn and Catherine Howard, both of whom were beheaded, and played a major role in the machinations affecting these royal marriages.
The dukedom was restored, four generations later, to his great-great-grandson Thomas Howard. Mary narrowly escaped execution on that occasion, but after being implicated in several subsequent Catholic plots, she finally fell from grace and was executed in February 1587. Upon Cromwell’s execution (1540) Norfolk emerged as the second most powerful man in England, but his position was again weakened when Henry’s fifth wife, Catherine Howard—another of Norfolk’s nieces—was put to death in 1542.
His son was executed, but the Duke escaped because the King died the night before his appointed day of execution. He was imprisoned for six years, released by Queen Mary in 1553 and died the following year.
