Durante el tiempo que permaneció en esta institución, publicó dos artículos científicos. Además, dedicaba a la física varias horas de estudio adicionales a las que recibía en la universidad.
En 1850, Maxwell se graduó con honores de la Universidad de Edimburgo y continuó sus estudios en la Universidad de Cambridge, donde se especializó en matemáticas. Fue en Cambridge donde Maxwell comenzó a desarrollar su famosa teoría electromagnética, que revolucionaría nuestra comprensión de la luz y la electricidad.
