Con el advenimiento de la sobrina de ambos, Victoria I (1819-1901), se separaron la Corona de Inglaterra y el Electorado de Hannover, pues las normas sucesorias feudales impedían que éste tuviera por soberana a una mujer (1837). La Corona de Hannover recayó sobre Ernesto Augusto I (1771-1851), tío de Victoria y hermano menor de Guillermo IV.

George, Duke of Brunswick-Lüneburg was the first member of the House of Hanover. When the Duchy of Brunswick-Lüneburg was divided in 1635, George inherited the Principality of Calenberg and moved his residence to Hanover.
