Coordinates: 53.4675°N 2.2325°W. The Victoria University of Manchester, usually referred to as simply the University of Manchester, was a university in Manchester, England. It was founded in 1851 as Owens College. In 1880, the college joined the federal Victoria University.

The Victoria University of Manchester developed out of Owens College, which was founded in 1851, and from 1872 incorporated the Royal School of Medicine and Surgery, which had been formed in 1824 as a medical school owned by doctors.
This university was established and granted a royal charter in 1880, becoming England's first civic university; following Liverpool and Leeds becoming independent, it was renamed the Victoria University of Manchester in 1903 and absorbed Owens College the following year.

1880 - Owens College was given a status of the England's first civic university, The Victoria University of Manchester. 1905 - The Victoria University of Manchester establishes a Faculty of Technology at the Technical School to teach university-level courses in technology. In 1918 renamed Manchester Municipal College of Technology.
