Cuando la Sampdoria quedó relegada en 1999, Montella fue transferido a la Roma por 3.600 millones de pesetas. [1] En este equipo, ganó un Scudetto y anotó goles de manera prodigiosa, por lo que se ganó el apodo de Pequeño Aeroplano , en referencia a su particular forma de celebrar sus goles.
His first two goals in Serie A actually came against Roma at the Stadio Olimpico on 21 September, 1996. He was signed as a Giallorossi player three years later and quickly became one of the fundamental building blocks of the squad that went on to win the title.
With Roma, Montella played a total of 215 matches over eight years, scoring 94 goals to become the fifth-best topscorer in Roma history. He played his last game for Roma, on 23 December 2006, before leaving on loan to England.
