Carlton Fisk's number 72 was retired by the Chicago White Sox in 1997. Fisk signed a five-year contract for $3.5 million with the White Sox on March 18, 1981. Fisk had worn number 27 with the Red Sox but it was worn by White Sox pitcher Ken Kravec.
