Jazz dance is a performance dance and style that arose in the United States in the mid 20th century. [1] [2] Jazz dance may allude to vernacular jazz, Broadway or dramatic jazz. The two types expand on African American vernacular styles of dance that arose with jazz music.
By 1957 Bandstand went national and was in 4 million homes. Clark’s “wholesome” image made African American dance moves (which were passed off as the invention of whites) “safe” for white people. In Studios, Matt Mattox and Luigi began teaching their codified Jazz techniques around this period.
