Virginity is the state of a person who has never engaged in sexual intercourse. [1] [2] The term virgin originally only referred to sexually inexperienced women, but has evolved to encompass a range of definitions, as found in traditional, modern and ethical concepts.

The importance of virginity of the woman at marriage has been linked to the property rights of men over women, a pattern with a long tradition in Mediterranean countries in particular (Kinsey et al 1953 ). The socio-biological view is that men prefer chaste women in order to ensure their paternity ( Daly & Wilson 1978 ).
