The medieval lords travelled frequently. A castle like Burgdorf remained empty much of the time, with only the chatelain remaining to oversee a few servants. But when the lord took up temporary quarters again, the castle and the city came back to life. Hundreds of nobles with their entourages and horses would gather for several weeks.
