Downside School (simply referred to as Downside) is an 11–18 mixed, Roman Catholic, independent, day and boarding school in Stratton-on-the-Fosse, Somerset, England. It was established in 1614 and is located in the Roman Catholic Diocese of Clifton.
Downside School, which until 2019 was attached to the monastery, is a Roman Catholic public school for boys and girls from the age of 11 to 18. As in most Roman Catholic schools in the 21st century, non-Catholic pupils are accepted. During the 19th century, Downside remained a small monastic school.
The Building of the Downside Abbey. In 1878 the building of the Abbey Church began. One of England’s finest Gothic churches, the Abbey Church still serves as the School’s main place of worship for Sunday Mass, weekly hymn practice, the Advent Carol Service and other services.
