American author Edgar Allan Poe was found delirious and disheveled at a tavern in Baltimore, Maryland, on October 3. He sought the help of magazine editor Joseph E. Snodgrass and was taken to the Washington College Hospital, where he was treated for apparent intoxication.

What we know is that he was found lying on a street in Baltimore, incoherent and dressed in someone else’s clothing. He was admitted to the Washington College Hospital on October 3, 1849, and he died on October 7, after reportedly repeating the still enigmatic name “Reynolds.”.
Several theories about Poe’s cause of death have emerged. The most prominent is that he died from complications of alcoholism. J.E. Snodgrass, the doctor who saw Poe in the tavern, believed that Poe had been drinking heavily and that he ultimately succumbed to the tremors and delirium that can accompany alcohol withdrawal.
