Memorial University was established in 1925 as Memorial College and was dedicated to those who served Newfoundland in World War I. It opened in St. John’s with an initial enrolment of 55 students and a full-time teaching staff of six.
Founded in September 1925 as a living memorial to Newfoundlanders and Labradorians who died in the First World War, Memorial is the largest university in Atlantic Canada and Newfoundland and Labrador's only university.
Memorial University was established in remembrance of Newfoundlanders killed in World War I. Memorial College opened in 1925 and became a full degree-granting university shortly after Newfoundland’s confederation with Canada in 1949.
