We have found that pnictogen bonds have a significant covalent character stemming from strong HOMO–LUMO interactions between the lone pair of A − and σ* of D 3 Pn. As such, the underlying mechanism of the pnictogen bond is similar to that of hydrogen, halogen, and chalcogen bonds.

A pnictogen (/ ˈ p n ɪ k t ə dʒ ə n / or / ˈ n ɪ k t ə dʒ ə n /; from Ancient Greek: πνῑ́γω "to choke" and -gen, "generator") is any of the chemical elements in group 15 of the periodic table. Group 15 is also known as the nitrogen group or nitrogen family.
