Bardelys the Magnificent is a 1906 historical adventure novel by the Italian-born British writer Rafael Sabatini. It is set in France during the reign of Louis XIII. Bardelys the Magnificent. The hero, a handsome, reckless favorite of the French monarch Louis XIII, wagers his estate with a rival for the King's favor that he can win a beautiful heiress in the province of Languedoc whom his opponent has courted in vain.
Bardelys is not Captain Peter Blood or Scaramouche, but is a fine hero in his own right and sphere. Sabatini is a master of pacing and Bardelys was almost as hard to put down as Sabatini's more famous works.
