Thinking, Fast and Slow is a 2011 popular science book by psychologist Daniel Kahneman . The book's main thesis is a differentiation between two modes of thought: "System 1" is fast, instinctive and emotional; "System 2" is slower, more deliberative, and more logical.

System 2 “kicks in” when we encounter a complex calculation or a complex analysis problem and must think deliberately about what to do. System 1 thinking is more susceptible to cognitive biases which are unconscious errors of reasoning caused by our simplistic information processing strategies.
