Statue of Pope Clement X. The Tomb of Pope Alexander VII is a sculptural monument designed and partially executed by the Italian artist Gian Lorenzo Bernini. It is located in the south transept of St. Peter's Basilica in the Vatican City. The piece was commissioned by Pope Alexander VII himself.

Alexander VII died in 1667 and was memorialised in a spectacular tomb by Bernini. However, Pope Innocent XI ordered that the naked Truth be covered up with a drapery colored in white. [18] It is famous for the skeleton holding a gilded hourglass, just above the doors.
Monument to Alexander VII. This, one of the most famous papal monuments in St. Peter's, is the masterpiece of the 80-year old Bernini. The door under the monument leads to an exit of the basilica. Alexander VII was the pope who commissioned Bernini to enclose St. Peter's Square with the colonnade.
The monument to Pope Alexander VII, which was designed by Gian Lorenzo Bernini (1598-1680), is situated above a door which is cleverly incorporated into the overall design. This was the first monument in the basilica to use such a conceit. Pope Alexander VII, the work of Michele Maglia, is depicted kneeling in prayer, his papal tiara at his side.
