Wakkanai (稚内市, Wakkanai-shi, Ainu: ヤㇺワッカナィ Yam-wakka-nay meaning "cold water river" or more literally "cold river valley") [1] is a city located in Sōya Subprefecture, Hokkaido, Japan. It is the capital of Sōya Subprefecture. It contains Japan's northernmost point, Cape Sōya, from which the Russian island of Sakhalin can be seen.
Wakkanai is a city located at the very north of Hokkaido. The city sprawls along the coast and provides access to the beautiful Rishiri-Rebun-Sarobetsu National Park. Given its location between Japan and Russia, this pocket of Japan is an interesting clash of cultures.
