Albrecht von Graefe (ophthalmologist) Friedrich Wilhelm Ernst Albrecht von Gräfe, [1] often Anglicized to Graefe [2] (22 May 1828 – 20 July 1870), was a Prussian pioneer of German ophthalmology. Graefe was born in Finkenheerd, Brandenburg, the son of Karl Ferdinand von Graefe (1787–1840).
Albrecht von Graefe (1828-1870) is often credited as the founder of modern ophthalmology for his many contributions to the medical field through teaching, practice, invention and discovery.

In 2020, the anniversary of his death will be observed for the 150th time. The “German Ophthalmological Society” (DOG), also a Graefe foundation (1857), has therefore proclaimed a “Graefe year.”.

Albrecht von Graefe, a trailblazer in ophthalmology, was considered the founding father of ophthalmology and the father of glaucoma in Germany.
Ophthalmology owes Albrecht von Graefe numerous first discoveries such as excavation of the optic disc in glaucoma (1855), iridectomy in glaucoma (1857), or central artery occlusion (1859).
