David “Shuffle” Steele was living on the Isle of Wight before he joined The Beat in 1978 and before the band turned professional he was working as a mental health nurse in Birmingham. When The Beat broke up in 1983, Steele and Andy Cox formed the Fine Young Cannibals with vocalist Roland Gift.
