George Spencer-Brown (2 April 1923 – 25 August 2016) was an English polymath best known as the author of Laws of Form. He described himself as a "mathematician, consulting engineer, psychologist, educational consultant and practitioner, consulting psychotherapist, author, and poet".

This paper focuses on the particularities of the second-order observation from the point of view of the calculus of form devised by George Spencer-Brown. In a first step, it highlights the potential opening up for the social sciences with the use of the form as observation strategy.
