On 1 November 1948, a thirteen-year-old Andrews became the youngest solo performer ever to be seen in a Royal Variety Performance before King George VI and Queen Elizabeth at the London Palladium. Andrews performed alongside singer Danny Kaye, dancers the Nicholas Brothers, and the comedy team George and Bert Bernard.
Andrews commenced her career as a child actress and singer, marked by her West End debut in 1948 and her Broadway debut in The Boy Friend in 1954. Her potential rapidly catapulted her to fame, earning her prominent roles in Broadway musicals such as Eliza Doolittle in My Fair Lady and Queen Guinevere in Camelot.

After her school closed due to the war, Andrews' parents decided to put her in singing lessons — and they soon discovered she had a rare four-octave vocal range. "It wasn't long before I became part of their act," she told Vanity Fair.
