This austere, ruminative and intense image of one of the great explorers of Victorian England captures his slightly brutal character very effectively. The artist Frederic Leighton met Burton in 1869 while they were taking a cure at Vichy, and on 26 April 1972 Burton began sitting for his portrait.

According to the Athenaeum, it was ‘a fine and very masculine portrait of Captain R. Burton, seated, little more than a bust, the head nearly in profile’, while to the Illustrated London News it had ‘a strength of character and impasto that the artist has not accustomed us to look for’.

Richard Francis Burton (Torquay, Inglaterra, 19 de marzo de 1821 – Trieste, Imperio Austrohúngaro, 20 de octubre de 1890) fue un cónsul británico, explorador, traductor y orientalista, aunque él se consideraba a sí mismo fundamentalmente un antropólogo y cultivó ocasionalmente la poesía.
