In his five decades of television, Fuller was known for his deep, raspy voice and was familiar to television viewers throughout the 1960s from his co-star roles on the popular 1960s Western series Laramie as Jess Harper and Wagon Train as Cooper Smith.

Fuller was born on July 29, 1933, in Troy, New York. His given name was Leonard Leroy Lee, and he was the only child of Elizabeth (Betty) Lee, a dance instructor.
In December 1962, while Laramie was still at its peak Robert married Patty Lyon. Laramie ran from 1959-1963 and from there Robert went straight into "Wagon Train" as chief scout Cooper Smith. Coop was a less volatile character than Jess Harper and Robert played him very differently.
