Ryan Fitzgerald Murphy OLY (born July 2, 1995) is an American competitive swimmer specializing in backstroke. He is a four-time Olympic gold medalist and the former world-record holder in the men's 100-meter backstroke.
Passionate about water safety and worked with both the USA Swimming Foundation and Goldfish Swim School to spread awareness about water safety. Wears festive socks on race days. Favorite professional sports teams are the Chicago Bulls, Chicago Cubs and Jacksonville Jaguars.
NCAA Champion in the 100 and 200-yard backstrokes in record time. His times of 43.49 and 1:35.73 broke his existing NCAA, American, and US Open records. Placed 3rd in the 200-yard individual medley with a time of 1:40.27. Named CSCAA Swimmer of the Meet with Joseph Schooling and Caeleb Dressel.

Murphy won the 50 backstroke in an American record and U.S. Open record time of 24.24, securing his spot for the 2019 World Championships. He also won gold in the 100 backstroke (52.51) and 200 backstroke (1:54.15) at the Phillips 66 National Championships, putting him on the 2018 Pan Pac team. Murphy finished 15th in the 100 freestyle (48.98).
