Nicholson se mudó a St Ives en 1939 y vivió en Trezion, Salubrious Place, durante 19 años. En 1943, se unió a la Sociedad de Artistas de St Ives.
Nicholson was commissioned to paint a mural for the Time-Life Building in London in 1952. He was given retrospectives at the Venice Biennale in 1954, the Tate Gallery, London, and the Stedelijk Museum, Amsterdam, in 1955.
