For six seasons of the beloved show Bewitched, Dick York played Darrin Stephens, the husband of Samantha ( Elizabeth Montgomery ). Then suddenly, he was replaced by Dick Sargent, who played the role for the show’s final three seasons. The reason was even more sad than York being fired or wanting to leave the show.
Vaguely resembling Dick York, Dick Sargent played Darrin with a more defiant attitude toward his witchy in-laws. In 1969, with Dick York as Darrin (his final season), the show was a ratings hit at #11, but when Sargent took over the role, ratings soon dropped and the show went to #24.
With that, York left the sitcom to devote himself to recovery, never to return. Dick Sargent replaced York in the role of Darrin Stephens, taking over the role at the start of the series' sixth season (1969–1970) and continuing in the part until the series ended after its eighth season (1971–1972).
