Baseball Almanac Research Library. The New York Yankees retired #49 - the only number Ron Guidry wore during his entire Major League / Bronx Bombers career - on August 23, 2003. Prior to that date, the Yankees had retired sixteen numbers, but only one other pitcher, Whitey Ford, who had his #16 retired on August 3, 1974.
