This is the current list of all planets that start with B approved by the International Astronomical Union. Unlike stars and constellations whose names come mostly from Greek mythology or Arabic words, planets get their names from many different cultures. Here’s what each of the columns in the table means: Planet: Name
The letter following the category and year identifies the planet (Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune; although no occurrence of the other planets is expected, Mars and Mercury are disambiguated through the use of Hermes for the latter).
Closed 6 years ago. An exoplanet named after its host star receives the suffix letter "b" if it was the first planet discovered to orbit that star, or "c" if it was the second, or "d" if it was the third, and so on. Why this naming system starts from "b" and not from "a"?
The lowercase letter "b" stands for the planet, in the order in which the planet was found. The first planet found is always named b, with ensuing planets named c, d, e, f and so on.

There are eight planets within the Solar System; planets outside of the solar system are also known as exoplanets . As of 16 May 2024, there are 5,630 confirmed exoplanets in 4,186 planetary systems, with 950 systems having more than one planet. [1] Most of these were discovered by the Kepler space telescope.
