In 2008, Sony Pictures announced that a sequel to Spider-Man 3 was in development and it was initially planned to be released on May 6, 2011, but it was cancelled in January 2010 after Sam Raimi (the director of the film) left the project, due to the failure and poor reviews of Spider-Man 3. Then, Sony Pictures opted to reboot the franchise with The Amazing Spider-Man in 2012.
