Tol Sirion, later known as Tol-in-Gaurhoth, was an island in the upper reaches of the river Sirion between the Ered Wethrin to the west, the Echoriad to the east, and the Fen of Serech to the north.
It was the site of the Ñoldorin tower of Minas Tirith.
The exiled Ñoldorin Elves of the House of Finarfin under Finrod first showed interest in the isle between the years 50 and 60 of the First Age, when Finrod raised Minas Tirith to prevent the armies of Morgoth from passing between the mountains and invading Beleriand. Finrod committed the isle to Orodreth, his nephew, who ruled it until it was conquered by Sauron after the Dagor Bragollach in FA 456. He turned it into a haven for his Werewolves, renaming it Tol-in-Gaurhoth.
Later on, in the Quest for the Silmaril, Beren and Finrod were captured by Sauron's forces passing the isle, and sent to its dungeons. After Finrod and his companions were killed, Lúthien and the hound Huan were able to defeat their captors and flee. The isle was cleansed permanently, but was no longer inhabited.

There Finrod Felagund built the tower of Minas Tirith on this strategic position, as the guarded Pass connected Ard-galen and West Beleriand .
